It was founded with the aim of providing comfortable accommodations to visitors from Maharashtra or Maharashtrians from different states. The facility also provided freshly prepared Maharashtrian style vegetarian meals. This was a big draw as people in those days, particularly vegetarians, may have found it difficult to adapt to the Bengali cuisine.

Maharshtra Mandal developed on social and Cultural front, bridging the gap between Maharashtrian and Bengali culture, and on the other hand Maharashtra Niwas developed in to an iconic Landmark Institution—A home away from Home!

It's a nice stop over for groups coming from Maharashtra. Budget rooms with good food and amenities for staying. The place is well maintained and very nicely located off Hazra crossing on the Metro Route. Has halls for larger gatherings and programs too. A little upgradation is necessary to match modern times and some more variety of food can be added.
